January is National Oatmeal Month. I bet you didn’t know that was a thing! I didn’t either until yesterday. Apparently, consumers purchase more oatmeal in January compared to any other month of the year – which I guess makes sense because it is often one of the coldest months of the year in many parts of the world.
Oatmeal isn’t for everyone, though. For some, oats are extremely hard to digest. Celiacs tend to avoid oatmeal due to some cross-contamination with wheat found in some products. Others like myself try to follow a mostly paleo diet where oats are a no-no. Fear not, though, paleo-eaters and oat-avoiders do not have to feel left out this month. Thankfully, grocery stores and online stores are now stocked with grain-free hot cereal options.
Sadly, one of my favorite grain-free hot cereal options, the Purely Elizabeth Cauli Hot Cereal that I reviewed last year, seems to have been discontinued recently. Although that tasty grain-free hot cereal option didn’t seem to make it to 2022, here are some other great grain-free oatmeal dupes that are currently available (in no particular order):
1. Keto b’stro Instant Hot Cereal
This keto-friendly, low-carb hot cereal option available on Amazon has 9 grams of protein, 14 grams of fat and only 1 net carb. That is an amazing nutritional profile for a hot cereal. This innovative hot cereal is made with a mix of nuts and seeds including pecans, almonds, coconut, almonds, flax, sunflower seeds and chia seeds. Instead of sugar or sketchy sugar alternatives, this cereal is sweetened with allulose and monk fruit. Collagen is added to provide additional health benefits. While gluten and grain-free, this is not a great option if you are also dairy-free, as this product contains milk powder. Are you skeptical to try this product? The manufacturer offers a 100% satisfaction guarantee for this product. Available flavors include Cinnamon Coconut and Cinnamon Pecan.
2. Wild Zora Instant Grain-Free Cereal
Wild Zora Instant Grain-free Cereal checks the boxes for those following gluten-free, grain-free and dairy-free diets. This healthy, hearty cereal seems to be more widely available than some of the other options. I found this hot cereal in-stock at Amazon, Thrive Market, Walmart, Vitacost and more. As an added advantage, this cereal features no sugar and is only sweetened with real dried fruit and coconut. Naturally sweetened flavors include Banana Bread, Carrot Cake, Blueberry Muffin, Apple Pie and Tropical Tart. This option is both paleo and vegan, although it is not keto.
The ingredients are clean and simple. For example, the Wild Zora Apple Pie is made only from dried apples, organic flaxseed meal, walnuts, shredded coconut, almond flour, ground cinnamon and sea salt. You can’t get much better than that! Wild Zora also sells an AIP (Autoimmune Protocol) version of this product made from a tiger nut base directly on its website if your are following a more restricted diet.
3. Wildway Grain Free Instant Hot Cereal
Although definitely pricey compared to traditional oatmeal, Wildway is a unique grain-free, certified gluten-free, keto, low-carb, vegan (dairy-free) and non-GMO hot cereal option. Each cereal is made with 100% real food ingredients that include ground flaxseed, walnuts, cashews, coconut flour, pecans, freeze-dried fruit, cinnamon and real vanilla bean. Unlike other grain-free hot cereal options, each Wildway packet is designed to keep you fuller longer by including more calories than traditional grain-free cereals. Available flavors include: Original (pictured), Blueberry Flax, Cinnamon Roll and Toasted Coconut. You can find Wildway grain-free hot cereals on Amazon, Walmart or you can order directly on Wildway’s website.
4. Make Your Own Grain-Free Hot Cereal at Home from Scratch
Sure, it’s easiest to buy hot cereal pre-packaged and ready to go. However, if you have some time and are feeling adventurous in the kitchen, the Internet is bustling with many fabulous grain-free hot cereal recipes. And most are not too complicated. Here are a few delicious options:
